Description

Notre-Dame-de-Paris, which was built between 1163 and 1330, is a masterpiece of French Gothic art. It was restored during the 19th century by Viollet-Le-Duc, who performed similar work on many of France's finest historic buildings.

Comment la litterature sauve l'architecture

Au coeur de la ville de Paris, là ou la ville est apparue premiérement, Notre Dame est un très bon exemple de comment un roman (du Victor Hugo)peut sauver le destin d'un cathedrale et le transformera d'un le plus remarquables monuments du monde. C'est triste qu'à cause d'infinie présence des touristes, on ne peut pas sentir l'ambiance sacrée du ce lieu.

Despite the constant band of tourists undulating through this cathedral, it's still one of the most serene places I know. It's not necessarily the most spectacular or historic of Europe's many churches, but worth experiencing nonetheless. Notre Dame is a monument to art, architecture, and religion. Even if you aren't interested in any of the above, you have to admit the price is right: it's free to enter. The religious can participate in services. The observant may light candles, for a small donation. The undecided can sit, ponder mortality, and listen to the pipe organ. Notre Dame remains one of the more solemn tourist "destinations" I know of in Paris - besides the Catacombs - yet one of the most popular. Due to the throngs that congregate outside and mill about inside, be wary of pickpockets. Please DO refrain from flash photography while you're there.
